Training on the Carlsbad Triathlon Course If You Arrive Early
Where to swim, bike, and run in Carlsbad before race day, from open-water entry at Tamarack Beach to the safest run routes away from highway traffic.
Train on the Carlsbad Triathlon Course Before Race Week
Swimming At The Race Start
You can swim at the actual race start at the beach outside race hours, but only if you understand where the surfers sit and what the bottom feels like. The lifeguard tower at the avenue beach entrance is your fixed landmark. It stays in place year round even when race buoys are not set. Enter the water south of the tower. The surfers sit farther north near the jetty. The bottom is a gradual slope of fine sand with no rocks or reef until you are past the break. Expect water temperatures of 66 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit in late August and 63 to 68 degrees in late October. Lifeguards staff the tower daily from 10:00 to 18:00 between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Outside summer, coverage is weekends and holidays only with reduced hours. If you arrive Thursday and want to swim Friday, go between 07:00 and 09:00 before the first lifeguard shift and before the surf crowd builds. Rip current risk is moderate, strongest near the jetty. Stay south of the tower and you avoid it.
When to Ride Carlsbad Boulevard
Timing The Coastal Road
Carlsbad Boulevard is the race course spine. It runs parallel to the coast from La Costa Avenue north to the Oceanside border with a continuous marked bike lane 4 to 6 feet wide. Riding it mid morning means sharing the road with RVs heading to South Carlsbad State Beach Campground. The campers roll out between 09:00 and 10:30. Avoid them. Start your ride at 06:00 to 06:30 on a weekday or 07:00 to 08:00 on a weekend. Finish before the commuter peak northbound from 07:00 to 09:00. Weekend mornings are light until 09:00.
Inland Climb Routes
If you want an inland climb, Palomar Airport Road east to Elfin Forest Road is 6.5 miles one way with roughly 1,100 feet of elevation gain. The gradient averages 4 to 8 percent with short pitches to 12 percent. La Costa Avenue east to Rancho Santa Fe Road is a shorter option: 4 miles with about 600 feet of gain. Both routes are best done early. Traffic on Palomar Airport Road picks up by 07:30.
Bike Shops And Spares
Bring your own derailleur hanger specific to your frame model and your own Di2 or SRAM AXS charger. Local bike shops like Revolution Bike Shop at 745 Carlsbad Village Drive can handle most repairs but may not stock obscure hangers. Nytro Multisport at 940 South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas specializes in triathlon bike fitting and repair. Pedego Carlsbad near the beach sells and services electric bikes only.
Where to Run Without Fighting Sidewalks
Reliable Paved Routes
The sidewalks along Coast Highway 101 south toward Leucadia are discontinuous. Sections disappear without warning. Do not plan a long run there. Use the Coastal Rail Trail segments instead. The paved path links villages but sections are incomplete. From the beach you have two reliable options. The Carlsbad Seawall is a concrete walkway running from the beach north to Pine Avenue, roughly 1.2 miles one way. The Carlsbad Beach Boardwalk is an asphalt path from the beach south to Cannon Road, about 0.5 miles. Combined as an out and back the seawall and boardwalk give you 3.4 miles. For a longer run, Carlsbad Boulevard has a continuous sidewalk south of the beach to South Carlsbad State Beach, approximately 3 miles one way.
Flat Dirt Trails And The Pool
If you want flat dirt, Batiquitos Lagoon trail is 1.75 miles one way on packed dirt. The trailhead is at 7380 Gabbiano Lane. Agua Hedionda Lagoon trail on the east end is a 2.5 mile loop also flat and packed dirt. The trailhead parking is at Bayshore Drive and Discovery Street. Both lagoon trails have no shade. Go early or late. The Alga Norte Aquatic Center at 6565 Alicante Road has a heated 50 meter outdoor pool. Lap swim hours on weekdays are 05:30 to 08:30, 11:00 to 14:00, and 18:00 to 20:00. Saturday hours are 07:00 to 12:00. Sunday hours are 09:00 to 14:00. The 2024 day use fee for a non resident adult was 8 dollars. The city of Carlsbad publishes the current fee schedule. Use the pool for uninterrupted continuous swimming at race pace. Open water sighting practice is not possible in a pool but the controlled environment lets you focus on pacing.
Flat Water Backup If the Ocean is Churned Up
Carlsbad Lagoon opens at 09:00 for paddleboarding, kayaking, and wakeboarding. It is not a swimming lagoon. You cannot swim laps there. What you can do is use a paddleboard or kayak to get a feel for open water movement without surf. The water is flat. Agua Hedionda Lagoon also rents paddleboards and kayaks. Neither is a substitute for a swim but both work as a low stress active recovery session if the ocean has 4 foot sets and you do not want to fight the shore break. For actual swimming when the ocean is rough, drive to Alga Norte Aquatic Center. It opens at 05:30 on weekdays. That is earlier than any lagoon rental opens.
Pronto App Setup Before You Reach the Platform
The Coaster train requires a Pronto card or the Pronto mobile app. You cannot buy a physical Pronto card on the train platform. You must load the app and activate a pass before you arrive. The app needs a data connection to activate. Cell service on the platform is usually fine but connection near the waterline is patchy. Set up the app at your hotel on Wi Fi. The Coaster runs from Carlsbad Village Station and Carlsbad Poinsettia Station to San Diego's Santa Fe Depot. One way fare is about 6 dollars 50 cents. The trip takes roughly 55 minutes. The Coaster does NOT run early enough on Sunday for a 07:00 race start. The first southbound train arrives after 09:00. Do not plan to use the Coaster to reach race start on race morning. Use it for scouting the village on a non race day. If you take the Coaster to scout Carlsbad Village, remember that many restaurants close by 20:00 on Sunday. Post race dinner options are limited to pizza and fast casual after that hour.

What to Know About the Water Before You Get in
Water visibility at the beach runs 3 to 8 feet. It varies with swell and tide. Surf height on summer mornings is 1 to 3 feet. Autumn mornings run 2 to 4 feet. You need a minimum of 3 consecutive days of open water swimming before race day. That is not optional. Cold water shock response diminishes with repeated exposure. A 3/2 millimeter fullsuit or sleeveless wetsuit is standard year round. Test your wetsuit fit and identify chafing points in those sessions. If you are flying from Europe, arrive 4 to 5 days before race day. A 07:00 PDT race start is 15:00 body clock time for a London athlete and 16:00 for a Frankfurt athlete. That is a real factor. Do not underestimate it.
Parking and Getting to the Race Site
Parking at the beach on race morning is extremely tight. The nearest overflow lot at the Oceanside Civic Center fills by 06:30. Parking at the beach is metered and enforced aggressively from 08:00. The app based payment system requires cell service which is weak near the lifeguard tower. Bring cash or have the app loaded before you arrive. The nearest major airport is San Diego International Airport. From there the drive to the beach is 35 miles and takes 35 to 50 minutes in free flowing traffic. Weekday afternoon congestion can stretch it to 75 minutes. Rideshare from SAN to Carlsbad costs 60 to 90 dollars. John Wayne Airport in Orange County is 60 miles north with no direct rail link. McClellan Palomar Airport is 3.5 miles from the beach and serves general aviation only.
What Goes Wrong Most Often
The single thing that most often goes wrong here: assuming you can walk or rely on rideshare between the race site, your hotel, and dinner without a plan. The coastal towns are spread across 15 miles. Rideshare wait times spike to 20 to 30 minutes when the race finishes. Carlsbad Village restaurants close by 20:00 on Sunday. Post race dinner options become pizza and fast casual. The marine layer can leave beach parking lots damp and chilly until late morning even when inland temperatures are in the 80s. Pack a jacket. Pack a backup dinner plan. This is a polished family forward coastal suburb where social life revolves around craft beer and kid friendly patios. It is not a gritty beach town with late night options. Carlsbad suits masters triathletes and their support crews who value predictable logistics and early morning coffee. It does not suit travellers seeking nightlife past 21:00 or solo backpackers on a hostel budget. There are almost no affordable beds and limited social infrastructure for that traveler.
