Book a table at The Compass on Carlsbad Village Drive for a sit-down meal with high chairs and a patio. After dinner, walk the village. They will walk to the finish line at the Tamarack State Beach parking lot between 8:30 and 9 AM, when you are roughly 90 minutes into the race. Tell them exactly where to stand: the finish line is in the parking lot adjacent to Carlsbad Boulevard. The marine layer will be present. Jackets, even in July. Cell service near the waterline is patchy. Live tracking apps will not work reliably. Do not rely on them. The family should pick a visible spot near the finish arch and stay there. You will find them faster than they can find you.

Where To Stay And How To Get There

Parking at Tamarack Beach on race morning is extremely tight. The nearest overflow lot at the Oceanside Civic Center fills by 6:30 AM. If your hotel is not walkable to the start, you will have a problem. The walkable hotel zone is Carlsbad Village, within 0.5 miles of Tamarack Beach. Three options: Tamarack Beach Resort Hotel at 3200 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort at 3075 Carlsbad Blvd, and Ocean Palms Beach Resort at 2950 Ocean St. All three sit within a quarter mile of the beach. All command a 30 to 50 percent premium over inland rates in July. The premium is worth it because it eliminates the parking crisis. Book a one bedroom suite or condo with a separate living area and door so a non racing partner can nap with the door closed while you sleep. If a suite is too expensive, book a two queen room and verify blackout curtains at booking. Race morning road closures: Carlsbad Boulevard from Cannon Road to La Costa Avenue, roughly 6 AM to 11 AM. If the Race Falls During Flower Fields Season (March to May)
